Sleepless in San Sebastian

Some places are simply too beautiful to leave:

View from our hotel in San Sebastian

This is the view from our room at Hotel de Londres y de Inglaterra in San Sebastian.  We are leaving in an hour, and I’m SO sad …

Even though we’ve maintained our new Spanish habit of dining at midnight, I’ve NEVER slept better in my life.  There’s nothing like leaving the windows open and letting the waves sing you to sleep ….

I just learned that Nora Ephron (author of When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle, etc.) died yesterday.  Three husbands, inside knowledge of who Deep Throat was, and multiple Academy Award nominations.

What a life!

She was 71 when she passed.

And somehow my perfect San Sebastian view reminds me of how beautiful and how fleeting life is … no matter how much acclaim your work may bring you, we all pass on all too soon.

And yet Nora’s writing lives on.

Is that what compels us to write?  I have more to say about San Sebastian, but we have a flight to Madrid to catch.

This post is dedicated to Nora … rewatch one of her movies this week if you can.  I particularly like her take on religion:

“You can never have too much butter – that is my belief. If I have a religion, that’s it.”

— Nora, discussing her film, Julie & Julia in 2009.

Do you have a favorite Ephron movie or quote?
